What is the best way to kill rats without them suffering?

If a rat is live in a trap how to kill it. The only practical way I can think of is drowning. Gassing is not a DIY solution. I have a problem with rats now they have decking both sides of me.What is the best way to kill rats without them suffering?
without them suffering...ummmm they are vermin and carry disease which can kill (Viles disease) poison, death is the answer...no nicely nicely approach, they are not pets, they are disease carriers!!!!!

I had rats and had to inform the enviromental health department who erradicated them for me and it didn't cost. What is the best way to kill rats without them suffering?
Leave them in your neighbour's house!

good question.i have no idea btw.i have cats at home so,my cats does the killing..haha
zap them with a cattle prod.
Get a couple of cats then they won't come near your place. If you don't want a cat and don't want the rat to suffer catch it in a humane trap which you put in a box and take it into the country and set it free.
food poison must be the best solution :::::::::

do like the decking add on , people don't plan the consequences do they :::::::if done right they would';nt be-able to set up home under there::!!!
The rat is pretty much dead any way. If it is making noises while it is dying and it bothers you, take the whole trap with the rat outside and go back in till it is dead.
rat poison is actually horific in its affects on the animals, it acts as an anti clotting agent and cos rats have poor eye sight and bang into things alot it causes them to bleed internially very heavily, not nice

drowning is the easiest diy solution, or drugging them with a heavy sedative, but the only truly humane thing to do is take them into the middle of no where and realise them
One .17 cal bullet to the back of the head
the best thing is to fill your house with giant cats if it doesn't then the rats are there to stay
Freeze the rats.

They slowly go to sleep in the cold, then eventually they'll die.
Drowning is not recomended due to unnecessary suffering. The most efficient and cost effective way of controlling rodents is poisoning.Use a proffesional pest controller or buy amatuer use products from your local garden centre(follow label instructions carefully). The method offering the least suffering is snap back traps i.e Fenn mark ll,as with most trapping, leave the trap unset/unbaited for a few days, then unset/baited for a further 48 hours, then bait and set to increase capture. This will also help overcome the rats fear of new objects(neophobia).Happy hunting!
