My rat has recently given birth to 9 babies, they have entered an extremely active stage in their growth. I make an effort to hold them daily, or twice daily, but they are still rather skittish, and don't like to play with me yet - I am curious as to the best ways to play with them so they retain the sort of disposition that makes them good pets. How do i socialize my rats from an early age to make them extra friendly?
just be patient... they will soon appreciate you and play with you...
maybe, they're not yet used to their surroundings...
just be patient...
hope that helps...How do i socialize my rats from an early age to make them extra friendly?
Yes, be patient. You are doing the right thing by making an effort to play with them once or several times a day. That in itself will help them get used to a humans presence and become more comfortable with you. If they dont want to be held, put them in a playpen with you next to them or in the middle of them, and just continue to talk to them, pet them, ect well they are playing with their toys, eating their snack, and stuff like that. With my rats just putting myself into their day to day lives without picking them up got them used to me very quickly. Of course, once they get used to you, they will even start hopping up onto you and into your hands. You can try bribing them. If they associate a treat with you, that can help them want to be with you more. Of course, that depends on if they are even eating solid foods right now.....I think it sounds like you are doing the right thing. Just keep it up!
just handle them regularly, feed them little treat by hand (if theyre old enough to eat), sit in a safe place and watch tv/read a book or something and just let them crawl over you so they can 'explore' and get used to your smell etc but theyll be more comfortable since youre not actually holding them or trying to get them to play or whatever.
