It's not going to make any difference whether they go up there barefoot or wearing shoes; do you think shoe soles are self-cleaning and don't carry germs? Also if you have rats in the attic you have rats everywhere, they get into everything. They'll come down after food, they won't just stay in the attic with nothing to eat... also mice and rats climb onto everything rather than walking on the floor only, so there'll be rat droppings and rat urine on shelves, stored items, lots of things you touch with your hands as well... I think it's a good thing to worry about the rats being a hygiene problem, but it doesn't make sense to just focus on your parents walking around barefoot and dragging any germs around in that manner only. If you have vermin in the house, get rid of the vermin... don't focus on one little aspect and expect to be safe from the rats.





No need to throw stuff out unless it's food. Rats carry germs but germs can be washed off you know! It's good to be concerned about hygiene but no need to be paranoid about it either. See about getting a professional exterminator in if the traps don't help, then do a good house cleaning. :-) And no, if they haven't chewed through the plastic the stuff inside should be fine, no need to wash the stuff inside closed bags/boxes... just wipe the exposed surfaces like the shelves and the top of containers %26amp; boxes and all, they walk/run on shelves as easily as on the floors.We have rats in our attic. ARE YOU SURE THEY'RE RATS? UNUSUAL TO HAVE RATS IN A ATTIC. THEY ARE MORE APT TO HANG OUT CLOSER TO GROUND LEVEL (BASEMENTS, ETC.). SURE THEY'RE NOT SQUIRRELS?
Unless they step all over the rats' poop should be fine. Just FYI, diseases can be transmitted through a rat's poop.
No because unlike rat poop which you can see, you cannot see their urine. That is plain gross and rats also carry disease.
