How does owning hamsters compare to owning rats?

How do they differ? How does owning hamsters compare to owning rats?
agreed with the first answer, rats are better. rats are very loveable, cuddly, easy to train, can run around on their own (just teach them their names), mine make me laugh, ect... they're just amazing, i own four. i had hammys when i was younger and growing up, but i can't even compare the two... rats are definately my favorite of the two.

EDITT if you're looking for actual adivce... i would first start off by getting him two instead of one. they're much happier and healthier living with a friend! and when you get them look for a breeder or adopt. you can easily adopt from petfinder.com... but i wouldn't suggest going to a regular petstore. they mass breed rats, without taking into consideration health or even incest. rats from petstores are bred to be food. but if you must go to a pet store... make sure females and males are seperated, they are eating lab blocks instead of seeds, when you hold them make sure they're not making any weezing sounds. most of the time petstore rats have respiratory problems, and if one is sick, the rest of them are sick. plus they're not socialized really from being babies, if you go to a breeder they will actually take care of their animals. and as for food plan on feeding quality lab blocks. Harlan Teklad is the best to buy http://www.craftyrat.com/Merchant2/merch鈥?/a> and don't feed seeds as a main diet. they don't have the nutrition they need, and they will pick and choose what they want to eat... which will eventually make them over weight as well. don't forget to get some hammocks. the best place to buy a cage is from martinscages.com and i have rat manors from petco that i love. but buy online because they're cheaper online by about 30$. but otherwise if you find a cage you like make sure to calculate it for the number of rats you have. http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.sht鈥?/a> use that, and it will tell you if you can keep two rats in it. and if you have any specific questions, you can ask me! trex_go_rawrrrrr@yahoo.com is my e-mail.

EDITT: if you've NEVER owned a rat, don't say they're not loveable. because if they were not loveable SO MANY people wouldn't bother with them. honestly, they're EXTREMLY loveable... and the more attention you give them the more attention they crave. extremly loveable and very smart! How does owning hamsters compare to owning rats?
I prefer hamsters i think they are GREAT pets i am getting another one (i haven't had one for a year) next week and i can't wait because they are very cuddly and really love you i don't like rats they are really big and aren't very loveable (i don't think anyway).

:)
rats are bigger, easier to train, easier to live with and longer lived...

hamsters are none of the above.
Hamsters are cuter and more cuddly. They also do acrobatic tricks on the bars of their cage.

Chrys shoudln't be hatin' on hamsters. :(
