Will they pee and poo everywhere like rabbits do?? Do they pee/poo when you hold them? How safe would it be for me to let my rats (when I get them) to run on my bed?Is it safe to allow pet rats to run on your bed/furniture?
They do poo a bit but it's fairly inoffensive poo. They poo more when they're nervous. Is it safe to allow pet rats to run on your bed/furniture?
It would be perfectly safe, they may chew your sheets though so lay an old one down =D
I let mine run around my room when i had them (God rest their souls), and they did the occasional pee or poo, but as I had laminate flooring, it's very easy to clear up.
I liked to let them have their freedom. I even put up a special climbing apparatus for them!
Be warned though, I have lost books, curtains, tops, shoes, cables and my prom dress because of this! They nibble through EVERYTHING. Get safety covers on your plugs/sockets and wires. Shut away any precious items and anything that may cause them harm.
Remember, the more you handle them, the more tame they'll be, so it's good to get them out for at least an hour a day.
Before I had my cats, i used to bring mine down stairs, and they would snuggle up in my sleeve whilst I watched a film on the sofa!
They'll need a big cage, and fresh food as well as a complete mix. Fresh water everyday, lots of things to gnaw on. You'll find everything you need and more at a large pet store.
Good Luck, let me know if you need any more advice!
Yes it is safe. However, they will most likely leave little droplets of urine or a few droppings to mark their territory. Just clean it up with a paper towel and it'll be good as new. If it really bothers you, get some large towels or old sheets and lay them down over your furniture when you get your rats out. When I had my rats, they ran on my bed/couch/chair when I had them out and I've never gotten ill from it. While you can catch certain diseases from the urine or feces of wild rodents, pet rats *rarely* carry anything that you would have to worry about. For the most part, it's a gross factor with them.
Rats poo/pee when they are startled so as long as they are not startled they should be ok. I let mine run around on my bed but I put a sheet over it just in case of an accident. also mine run on the furniture as well but you must be careful that they dont chew
To the lady ahead of me, very seldom are domesticated rats ever infected with a disease, most of which aren't able to pass along to humans.
no
They will if they are not potty trained, or just get uh, over excited, I guess. I've heard of people training them to not poo anywhere besides in their cage. You can also litter train them, and put little litter pans around the room so they will go to one designated area if they have to poo. As for the pee, they will mark their territory with little drops of pee, but it's hardly noticeable and you can clean it up with a rag, or lay down towels for them to play on.
Good luck!
My rat has free roam of my bed and couch when I let her out. She dribbles alittle bit but it is nothing serious. Even at her old age and weak control she rarely poops any where but her cage. And if the rat is healthy its poo should be mushy and is quite easy to clean up.
Might not be a good idea health wise.
I put a little paper bag or cardboard box on the sofa when the boys come out and they pee and poo in there arent they helpful!
The girls sometimes poo but only wee on the designated spot in their cage which is great :)))
You can get HPS from infected rodents droppings as well as Murin Typhus from rat fleas, Leptospirosis, and Enoseniphilic Meningitis.
i've noticed since all my rats are litter trained they very rarely leave ';presents'; behind. although what you can do if your letting them out on your bed is get and old sheet and cover it up. its not so much that when they do have an occasional accident your going to have to go and get a new bed or anything.
i let my rats run all over my house, the thing that you should be worried about is them chewing cords!
i've lose a cell charger, a telephone cord, and a couple usb cords to my rats chewing them.
most rats can be taught their names and will come back when you call them for other things you might worry about!
Yes the rats will perform all necassary bodily functions as the mood strikes. I have never heard of any safety issues. I guess it would depend mostly on what you are willing to put up with. One word of caution....keep your eye on them. Left to their own devices they will do some nasty things like chew wiring on lamp cords and such. Actually, I think the bed is a great place to play with your rats.
