I have one rat and I am planning to get him two little friends. How large should the cage be?How large does a cage for three rats have to be?
im glad you asked this, i have two boy rats. your rat has to be Young to introduce the other rats to each over, and the other two have to be young too if you want them to like each over. it may work with older rats but im not sure. any way... people say you don't need big cages for rats, but i believe you do; rats are extremely Intelligent and need things to play with and things to do, if they do not have lots of toys then you need more space for them to run around in and play with each over instead. i think its best if you have some toys, they don't have to be fancy expensive things from like pets at home you can make things out of boxes, old clothes for hammocks, treats rapped up in paper, string, tunnels pine cones, ect. they are the usual things i use.
i got my 4 story cage of ebay for 45拢 they had some left a thew weeks ago but have just sold out. you can get it new for something like... 60拢 from caburies shopping center in england, jus incase ur from america or something. it is cheap, seriously, for what it is, its really cheap. they are probs in other shops but i just dont know them, i will have a search on the internet and email you if i find another place that sells them.
hope i helped.
ps. the cage was a three terrier rat/ferret/chinchilla cage with one more little floor on the top. its the perfect size. maybe a LITTLE BIT big. its perfect for you because the person who i bought it from said it was aqueduct for three rats.
pps. do not get balls for you rat to go in side and roll around or wheels inside the cage because the ball is not good for the rats back and the rats tail gets caught in the wheel sometimes.
ppps. look at my other questions i answered about rats and they will help you with any thing else you dont know
pppps. i teach my rats tricks they can: spin, beg and come when i call them, if you havent already taught them tricks then have a go, i found out how to do my tricks from a person called masterofthemidgets on youtube by typing in like 'rat training' in the little box thing.
really hope i helped. How large does a cage for three rats have to be?
The bigger the better, they love space.

This is as small as i would go any smaller and they wont be happy.

If you can afford bigger they go bigger.

DO NOT use glass tanks as they don't give enough ventilation which can cause breathing problems
i would only get him one friend of the same sex.
a cage for 2 doesnt need to be massive. we used an old glass fish tank that was 1m x 0.5m x 0.5m
EDIT - there is nothing wrong with using a glass cage if you have a mesh roof to it. there is plent of ventilation. it also means the rats cant flick any sawdust or poo out the tank. inside the tank you can put many things for the rats to climb and play with.
Suffice it to say, that whether you're a rat, or a human, overcrowding can lead to conflict! How much space can you give up in your home to a cage? The bigger the cage, the happier your rats will be. Whatever size cage you currently have, consider tripling that. Just put yourself in the rat's place for a few minutes. As a rat, how much space would make YOU happy?
well.....it doesnt have to be gigantic...a 20 gallon long tank would be okay but it doesnt have as much space...its also just not the best thing to keep them in...

i keep three rats in this cage...they love it...and it gives them a lot of room to play in
i keep my oldest female at the top...and my younger male and female at the bottom...they dont get a long so i have to seperarate them ....
Quite big. But if you let them run around on the table their cage is on and leave the cage door open you don't need a huge cage! :D
PLEASE TELL ME HOW MANY POINTS YOU NEED TO GET ON TO DIFFERENT LEVELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, i think it should be quite big, so they have room to run and around and sometimes have there own space. Also, make sure they each have there own bed or bedding area. They need some space from the others, otherwise fights could break out between them.
Hmm. May I suggest instead only getting one other rat? While rats are social creatures and love company, I can see all sorts of bad things happening with three in one cage, especially if the one you already have is territorial.

I hope this site helps, theres a bit oo much info for me to type out, but it is useful.
definitely get 2, i mean if you only get one, and the one you have now suddenly dies you'll be back to square one and with only one rat.
In MY house...just big enough to drown them....
But in your house....ask the pet store or call the and ask them for the right information. you want them to be comfortable....
2 square ft per rat. So, at lest 6 sq ft.
Almost a meter and they like running around in wood aswell
