My family is moving house in about a week and we're going to have to move the rats and mice with us in the car, but the problem is the drive is six hours long and in typical Australian summer heat. I really don't want the rats and mice to overheat or anything, so what precautions can we take to ensure they're comfortable etc?How do I keep rats and mice from overheating/dehydration while in the hot car for six hours?
yo u can turn the air con on so that they would stay cool. You can also have about 3 bottles filled with water. 1 bottle per 2 hours. You wont need that much, but it's just for just in case. You can also put them into those ice box so they stay cool. Before your move, you should freeze the bottles, but not like ice ice. just cold. Hamsters won't be able to take in too hot or too cold things. You should put them in a shady area of the car so the sun doesn't get them and you should also put a white cool towel over the hamsters so they will be nice and cool.
Be sure that you are always beside them and don't leave them in the car alone. If you go out( without leaving a gap for air, which it's still going to be hot,)they might suffocate. So remember:
-put them in a shady area
-put a cool damp White cloth over them
-give them about 3 bottles , refills if necessary
-put the bottles thats not in use in the ice box if you have one
-Don't let any of your mice/rat equipment in the sun or else the temperature in the cage will change
-be with them at all times
-make sure they have enough air under the cloth, and when you leave -the car ( but i suggest you dot leave it).
-keep the air con on in the car
-spray bottle just to mystify them. I love a cool spray of mist on a hot summer day!
Don't worry, they will be okay. Rats and mice are strong animals who can stand a lot of temperature. ( how do you think rats and mice lived before human took care of them?)

Spray bottles are always good, my rat loves getting sprayed with the spray bottle. Also a old wet facewasher can also help for your mice/rats to lay on. Ice cubes are also a smart option. My rattie loves pushing around icecubes when it's hot. Also make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink, and I guess have a play in if they feel like gettin' wet.
Have fun at your new home!
They say that rats and mice along with cockroaches will survive a nuclear war so I wouldn't worry unduly.
You'll be stopping along the way I expect, so give them the same consideration too.
Maybe keep the windows open to cause a through draft and supply plenty of water.
I guess air conditioning is not an option, so
*give them plenty to drink
*buy a refillable, plastic hand held water spray--like one you might see in a hair salon. Adjust the nozzle to spray fine droplets and spray it on your pet. It would be nice to spray chilled water.
*make sure that they aren't cramped together and there is enough space for each pet
* make sure that the pet is in an airy cage, no direct sunlight.
Freeze some water bottles and put them in the carriers (secure them so they dont roll around!!) :) keep some handy in an esky also so you have some when the others melt. You could also put a wet towel over the carriers, that helps to keep the air flow cool :)
Put your carrier in a cooler..no joke! That's what I did and it worked great! Just keep a close eye on them and they should be fine! :)
frozen watterbottles, slabs of cool tile, spray bottles, and lots of water. Air conditioning?
