How can i get my mom to overcome her fear of rats?

I really want a pet rat, but my mother has a horrible fear of them. I've told her plenty of times that they are clean and they are the most social of all the rodents. It's just an irrational fear, it's not like she drops dead every time i show her a picture of them, but my mother is very stubborn sometimes. She thinks they're gross and hates they're long tails. But i really want a pet rat. They're so cute! ^_^ Any ideas on how get her to overcome this fear? How can i get my mom to overcome her fear of rats?
My mom is the exact same way. She used to live in New York and Puerto Rico and get giant rats all the time. Plus, she used to go on the subway and see rats crawling around showing their yellow teeth and sneaking people's crackers from their purses. She also doesn't like their tails. I talked to her about ';pet'; rats and how they are very different than street rats. For one I'm pretty sure they are smaller, and they are very clean. Also, their teeth aren't yellow and disgusting. Now, I don't have anything against any animal except maybe bees but anyway.. I told her how there are cute rats and showed her pictures. After our long talk about rats she started to accept pet rats. Not enough to let me have one but now she doesn't scream if she sees one. :)How can i get my mom to overcome her fear of rats?
First of all, she would have to want to overcome her fear. I'm thinking she doesn't want you to have a rat, so she is not going to get over her fear. It will have to be one of those things you do when you live on your own and pay all of your own bills. Right now, it's part of the price you pay for being taken care of by someone else.
There are tailless rats, and some people who have a problem with regular rats can tolerate the ones without tails. I would suggest searching for a breeder in your area and asking your mother if she would allow you to have one of those instead.

Just an aside, the rats are born without tails and are not amputated.
