well first have homes already set a side for them.
dont wait and just so oh will find them.
the most common rat litter is 13 kittens.
they are called kitten but i call them ratlets.
feed the female tons more protien and food as she is eating for 13.
do not handle the female as much because you could hurt the small babies. keep the male seperated from her.
she will be pregnant for about 21-23 days.
i would say take her to the vets midway.
i always did and got x rays to make sure she was fine and would have a healthy birth.
seperate the other females ounce she is born.
have thins she can use to make a nest if she wants sometimes they will not.
you can sex the babies with in 3 days.
seperate the males and females later on.
hope i helped.
good luck. What is the best way to go about breeding pet rats?
I would not recommend breeding unless you have specific people who want to buy your babies already, and you know everything possible about rats and have a good amount of years of experience with them. The fact that you even had to post these specific questions shows that you aren't ready to do this. There are too many poor rats out there who don't have homes already, and many people breeding. If you want new rats, just go adopt some babies from a long-time experienced breeder, or find someone who breeds per request.
Before breeding rats you should know ALL about them and it.
You should not breed unless you have sorted homes for all the possible babies.
After this just leave them in the same cage.
Then when the babies come remove the male immedietly, and leave the females with the babies, they should both mother them.

Is a good site to read up about breeding.
the best way 9is leaving the male with the selected female for 4-5 days (when shes in heat) so ya thats about it, but please dont breed them unless you know they will have homes.
