Answering your question is not easy ;) It would mostly depend on whether the subject rats were males or females...
If they were males you would likely need far more subject rats, being as male rats are usually so chilled and lazy they would hardly ever do any running.
If they were females you would likely need less subject rats, but the running time would be spasmodic due to female rats usually having to constantly take breaks to squabble and argue with each other.
