I have had my elderly rats thin out near their *** and upper back as they got older but this is the first Rex rat I've owned and she has a couple of patches of missing fur where she is just going bald but not thinning anywhere else. Her sister is not rex and she is thinning. Is this just how rex rats age or is this more of an allergy or something? Thanks.Do Rex rats go bald in different patterns than regular rats?
as rex rats age, they can lose patches of fur here and there. It sometimes will grow back and they will lose another patch somewhere else. There are also patchwork hairless rats that do the same thing.Do Rex rats go bald in different patterns than regular rats?
The fur will periodically fall out and grow back in throughout the rat's life in different patterns.
It could be from her cage mate barbering her. It's like over-aggresive cleaning. In the past my rats have had thinning hair but I've never had one go bald, even in rex and double rexes. Keep and eye on the two of them for now and see if the balding one is being picked on by the dominant. Good luck. :]
