What's a Pet and Children safe way of erradicating rats and mice?

I have heard that if you mix three parts corn flour and one part dry cement that it is effective (i think that ratio is right, correct me if I'm wrong) the rodents eat it and with water it solidifies internally.

I don't want to use poison baits or traps if it can be avoided for safety's sake, so anything like the above mentioned one would be good, or if you've heard of success with that method would also be good to know. Thanks in advance for any information. What's a Pet and Children safe way of erradicating rats and mice?
Poisons and traps would be much less painful and more humane than creating a lump of cement inside the rodent.

I would recommend traps. Properly placed traps are very effective and you don't have to hunt down the dead animal which could cause a bigger health hazard rotting in your walls. Lay the traps where you see concentrations of urine or feces, along walls, rafters, and in choke points (between boxes or other obstacles). Check the traps daily and empty in the trash.

You'll also want to eliminate sources of bedding and food for them. Anything they've gotten in should be thrown out immediatelyWhat's a Pet and Children safe way of erradicating rats and mice?
mashed potatoes breadcrums and rat/roach poison, mix em', make em into little 1in diameter balls and mush them in coners where kids wont evendare to look..

kills rats and roaches, no allergies for anyone, no sick smell, works like a charm.
