I have several dogs and cats and they are all interested in my newly adopted rats. Is there a chance they may become friends? Is friendship likely to happen more with cats or dogs? I have had ferrets before and they had wonderful relationships with the other dogs and cats. I have a young Yorkie mix that wants to ';see'; and play with the rats so bad. I truly love my new little guys, but I'm thinking I might enjoy rat ownership better if I didn't have other pets. Does anyone else have any cross-species experiences? Will my rats ever be friends with my dogs and cats?
In the past, I've owned dogs, cats, and rats, at the same time. The dogs %26amp; cats did just fine with the rats *even when the rats would 'escape' from their cages and wander the house. Rather cute, actually, you'd see a line of dogs %26amp; cats with their noses to the ground, and this tiny rat in the front of the line*
It really depends on the breed of dogs, and the prey drive of the cats, though. My cats weren't hunters, even if their lives depended on it, and my dogs wouldn't hurt a fly.
Only dog I ever had a problem with, was a Jack Russell, and that was to be expected, since it's the breed's 'purpose', to be rodent hunters.
I currently have 3 rats and 1 cat. They live in peace. In fact, the only 'altercation' I've had with my rats, is one of them biting a Golden Retriever on the nose for sniffing her. lol *Dog was unharmed*
Anyways, if you feel that your other pets would be too pushy when you take your rats out of the cage, have a room dedicated to the rats, where your dogs %26amp; cats are not allowed in.Will my rats ever be friends with my dogs and cats?
Not good ones I'm afraid. One of my dogs catches and kills wild rats from the yard. She is a toy spaniel
From my experience the dog tolerates the rats but the rats dont tolerate the dog. The cats are afraid of the rats my rats are cat attackers. I did introduce the dog and cats to the rats I got and the cats didnt really care but a few days later when I had the one rat out I saw her ';investigating'; my cat and before I could react she jumped on my cat and my cat has hidden when I open the cage door ever since. The dog just does her stuff but if the rat is out she will attack our dogs feet. I would honestly be more worried about the rats going after the other animals than the other animals going after them, unless they have a prey drive and are playful or are in the terrier group.
the best thing to do is get them all when little so they can grow together but since you didnt do that just hold one of the rats and hold him close let your dog see the rat or let the cat and what you do is let them sniff them but if there hair is standing up or they are foaming than dont do it but if they dont than keep introducing them slowly than you could keep going up alevel until you trust them fully
i woult not even try it. dogs and cats will chase then and try to kill them. its in their genes
