How do I get rid of rat urine odor in my wood rafters? The rats are gone but the smell remains.?

I had a roof rat infestation in my cottage. We got rid of them but the smell of their urine in the wood framing and rafters (douglas fir) is very strong. What products eliminate the odor without damaging the wood? How do I get rid of rat urine odor in my wood rafters? The rats are gone but the smell remains.?
Lysol Spray... it will kill the odor and bacteria from it.How do I get rid of rat urine odor in my wood rafters? The rats are gone but the smell remains.?
odoban

it is a odor-neutralizer, fairly safe, and a viral killer and bacterial killer
I had a squirrel get stuck in our attic and it died and the smell was so bad after we got it out . He got some large boxes of baking soda and pour it on the wood where it was and it took the smell away and it never came back.

Worth a try it worked for me.
If the smell is in the wood framing I m afraid you will find that the only ting to do is seal it.

I suggest first using a product called Shockwave on it to kill any bacteria first. Shockwave comes in gallons and mixes 64:1. SO one galon gives you ALOT OF SPRAY. One gallon should cost around $25.

Afterwards, it should have time to dry and then be painted with a product call B-I-N by ZInnser. It is a shellac based sealer that will seal the wood and prevent it from offgassing the urine. It is work but this is a guaranteed fix. This is how I charge people to do it..... I offer a money back guarantee and haven;t had to give any back in 19 years.
Hi there,

I was having the same problem with critters that made their home in my balcony roof in this past winter. They only stay there to have their babies, then in spring they live outside in the trees. But they leave behind a very strong urine smell. I use mothballs to get rid of the smell, it works.I don't think they will want to live there anymore, they don't like mothballs. You could put 5 or 10 mothballs in old pantyhose to make a mothball satchel thingy, then hang them here and there, tying them onto the rafters,as much out of sight as possible.Yes......you will have a mothball smell, you can burn candles or incense if the smell bothers you,but I would rather smell mothballs then you know what........the mothballs will absorb the smells. Also if the rats decided to visit again, the mothballs would keep them away ,because it is an animal repellent also.

It is a good ideal to wear gloves when you are handling mothballs and keep out of reach of kids.I would also suggest not using them if you don't have good ventilation.Very toxic if eaten. They are made of chemicals,so you would treat this product the same way as other household cleaners, keep out of reach of critters and kids.If you have cats, not good if they snack on these. So you have pros and cons with this product. Good Luck!

Here is a link so you can read more about mothballs.
This stuff is really supposed to work it is called Urine Gone.

fire!!
It's probably in the insulation. You can wait it out with potpourri and lysol, or you can remove and replace the insulation in the ceiling. Niether will be pleasant, but replacment will work fastest even if some is absorbed into the wood.

I've been there myself with pack rats.
