My two females were names Baba and Ganoush. People who know what that is think it's pretty funny and no it's not made out of rats. My next two will be named Baba and O'Riley (you know, the who...teenage wasteland)

Edit: Holy crap what's with all the thumbs down? Someone has issues and the internet is not the place to solve them. I'm sure glad that you get a sense of self worth by giving a thumbs down to everyone who is just trying to ';help'; you.

How long after birth does it take rats to start mating?

I got baby rats a couple weeks ago and now they are getting a lot bigger. The males balls are growing and i want them to mate and make babies, but I want to know how long it will take. How long after birth does it take rats to start mating?
Males take up to 3 weeks to be ready for breeding. females however can range anywhere between 4-5 weeks after birth.

Momma rats can get pregent again immeditaly after birth. How long after birth does it take rats to start mating?
If you want them to mate, you're screwed. I just read a horrible story about a woman with over 300 rats living in her walls and it broke my heart. If you don't want a LOT of babies (that you most likely can't take care of) fast, then separate your rats by gender %26gt;.%26gt;

Yes, we all want to experience that 'miracle of life,' once, but seriously, for the sake of the rats, don't give them the chance to mate.
ya if all the rats came from the same batch dont breed that is inbreeding and that is wong for the babies i understand that u might acendtly have one here and there get breed but dont do it on purpose i breed hamsters and the gestation period is around 16 to 20 some odd days u take them from the mom at 4 weeks and they can start to breed at 6 to 7 weeks old so separate sex in diff rent cages that is how i do it in the pet store i work in if you have in more questions just ask and u might already have some pregnant females and they can have a lot of babies !!!! regular hamsters ave between 8 and 26+ so they may have more if they are big rats
do you want the parents to mate or babys if babys then wait they can mait but it will cause the female to have a hard time giving birth and also you havn't known them that long so they may not trust you enough to help her giving birth if adults wait for insides to heal see compare them to humans

to young = complications

just gave birth= not fully healed
Are you CRAZY?!?!?!

Do you even KNOW what you're getting into?!?!

If you got the rats from a petstore, DO NOT BREED, because they'll have genetic defects that you'll stupidly pass onto their offspring. If you got the rats from a breeder, DO NOT BREED, because there's a 90% chance that you'd be inbreeding, which is wrong and will produce babies with serious issues. If you got the babies from two different breeders, are the breeders legit? Do you have a REASON to breed?!

People like you are the reason that give rats a bad name, people think that they're vile, disgusting creatures. Why is that? Well, there's 20 rats, all females are pregnant, most are inbred, in a cage that's too small for 3 RATS!!! Therefore, their dung is piling up, their urine is soaking into the bottom and into the dung, and they have dirty waterbottles, and have a lack of food.

Do people THINK before they do stupid things?

-agrees with Demon- she beat me to most of my rant.
x__x DO NOT IRRESPONSIBLY BREED!

If you don't know what the Hell you are doing, DO NOT DO IT. If you're not going to take into consideration that they may be brother and sister, that there are hundreds of rats out there that need ADOPTED, that rats can have litters of up to 22 babies, when they're supposed to be weaned, etc. YOU SHOULD NOT BE BREEDING.

Just because you think it's going to be cute and cuddly is a stupid excuse. If you're breeding to feed a different animal, now that I may understand, except baby rats get big FAST. So you'd better have a pretty large animal.

But seriously. Adopting is a lot easier. There's enough rats out there that need homes. You don't need to contribute to the poor health of rats by randomly breeding two together because you think it'll be a fun experience.

For God's sake, you should have done research before even considering it. People like -you- are the reason we have too many animals that get abandoned on the streets or put down daily.

You don't need to breed any more rodents. Plenty of people already are.

I just had to find a home for 30 baby rats whose moms I RESCUED. 10 of them went as FEEDERS. Meaning they were fed to some animal. 6 of them I fed to MY Pacman frog and STILL had difficulty placing them.

Seriously. Don't be stupid.

Don't irresponsibly breed.
Do a google search. This information takes mere seconds for you to find on your own and is readily available on hundreds of websites. Or, read a book about rat care, every book out there has a chapter on reproduction.
Why on earth would you get a male and female in the same cage if you didn't want them breeding. Anyhow, I've heard male rats getting female rats pregnant as early as 3 weeks old. You're pretty lucky if they aren't already.
No you do not want them to mate, that thing could make up to 15 rats. imagine if you loose one.

and yea it takes up to 2 and half months or less 2 months for them to star mating.
What hedgehogs you after?

i can get 3 different kinds

How do I get my rats to go on a Rat Wheel?

I am very good with rats, you may have seen a bunch of my answers in this column on rats. I am not an expert, though. I know a lot of stuff about em but, you know. Well, I got my rats a huge cage with a wheel for them. They were NOT raised on a wheel, so they're not using it. I want them to get their excersize and have more fun on their wheel. How do I influence them to go on the wheel? How do I get my rats to go on a Rat Wheel?
What kind of wheel is it? A lot of rats don't like mesh or wire wheels, but will like a solid plastic one. One great wheel is the Wodent Wheel, which you can order online.

Try giving your rats a treat when they go on it. Only do this intermittently, as animals will learn faster if the praise if only once in a while. (They will keep trying in order to get the prize, like people playing a slot machine)

Or try putting a treat like jam or a bit of yogurt on the top of the wheel in the inside, so they have to run on the wheel before they can get to the jam or whatever it is.

Give them time. Rome wasn't built in a day, and rats are sometimes apprehensive of new things, so they might have to get used to it.

In the end, though, some rats take to wheels happily, some rats don't, and others will with a little coercion. It's just like some people like swimming, or riding a bike, and others hate it.

Do you have a room in your house, (I use my bathroom) where there is nothing valuable or important (be careful of electrical wires, as well!) for your rats to chew up, hide under, or pee all over? You could let them free-range there every so often under supervision for exercise, instead of the wheel if they REALLY hate it.How do I get my rats to go on a Rat Wheel?
Assuming the wheel is the right size [if it isnt they wont bother trying to use it really and if they do it will damage their spine] all you can do is leave it in their cage.

Some of my rats love their wheel, but when I first got it, the same rats hated it. They tried hiding it with bedding etc. but eventually they began to like it and now take it in turns running on it all the time. My male rats have shown little interest in the wheel, but my female rats LOVE theirs. If you have only just put the wheel in I would give it a little time and see if they take to it.

Edit: Have just seen your edit and as they are female I would think that if you leave them with it for a while they will use it, they are just wary of it at the moment.

Also just because rats use a wheel does not mean they dont get enough out of cage time Prodigy, my girls are out for atleast 2 hours a day not including the time i have the out individually, yet they still enjoy their wheel, it's just down to the individual rat.
Firstly, make sure the rats fit the wheel they are running on because it can damage their spines if it is too big or small.

Most rats will use their wheel eventually once they get used to it. Leave the wheel in there and let them get used to its presence.

If your rats need a bit more encouragement then put a dab of peanut butter on the top, inside of the wheel so that they need to move the wheel to get to it.

Some rats never end up liking the wheel, in that case just rat proof a room in your house and let them run freely.
I'd say to leave them be if you have just gotten it, if they're not interested after a week I dont think anything could be done about it, it could be to do with the type of wheel I dont know. If you want to exercise them having them going up the stairs can be quite good. I train all of my rats to do it they love it.

(edit) of yeah and if you choose to let them free roam don't get them those oversized hamster balls bigger rodents can have, rats absolutly hate it being closed off like that.
Many rats will not use a wheel. I personally think they are too smart to run on a stationary object. It is far better for them to get their exercise from the time they get out of their cage. If they are getting an adequate amount of free time(playing outside of the cage), then there really is no reason for them to use a wheel.

They may use the wheel and they may not. I have never had a rat that would use a wheel. I only bought one(about 5 years ago) and returned it about a week later.

Any suggestions on getting rid of mice/rats and not harming my cats?

since katrina the mice/rats have gotten really bad and are now in my walls.they have eaten a hole through my new drywall behind several heavy appliance's can hear them in the walls.i have 2 cats and 2 dogs and they do their part but they are old.any suggestions?can't put down poison and there are to many for live traps.Any suggestions on getting rid of mice/rats and not harming my cats?
Wow! That is a dilemma. I understand not wanting to use any poisons, even if your cats or dogs don't get into it. If they got a hold of one of the rodents that had eaten the poison, they could still become ill.

If there are too many for simple small traps, what about using a LIVE TRAP? Place bait of cheese chunk or peanut butter on crackers in the back of the cage. You could catch entire families at a time. Small traps come in large quantities and can be placed inside areas in multiples.

Otherwise, I can only think to call an exterminator. Many have applications they can use that are less harmful, and?or can be placed inside the walls.

We live in the country, and always have field mice finding their way inside in winter. I have 4 cats and 3 dogs, so I definitely understand your worry here. But in all honesty, those are the only means I know of to get rid of them.Any suggestions on getting rid of mice/rats and not harming my cats?

  • Can my apartment landlord do anything about rats in my apartment and cockroaches?

I just moved in 3 weeks ago and today I just saw a rat after waking up in the middle of the night and 2 medium sized cockroaches that I didn't even know where they came from just running around my desk.

Can my apartment manager do anything about it?

What can they do?Can my apartment landlord do anything about rats in my apartment and cockroaches?
Legally he must take care of it- call the housing authority if he does not, and keep complaining. You poor thing. Yuck! Can my apartment landlord do anything about rats in my apartment and cockroaches?
    professional exterminator
Im sure they will deliver, if you want more, you only have to ask.
A rat or a mouse?? There is a huge difference. If you have a rat in your house, I suggest you move immediately before you get attacked. If you have a mouse, go to the landlord and tell them about your pest infestation. Make him send out an exterminator to handle your problem.

Also on your own you can get some boric acid, add a little bit of sugar and spray down your entire apartment, behind appliances and in cracks. All of your vermin will leave at once.
Eww that's gross and sooo not sanitary. It is an apartment so check with them. Usually they take care of that stuff. I sure wouldn't stay if they didn't.
yes give you your money back or move you to a place thats clean.
Not only can he,by law he MUST!!!!! Tell him to get a move on please. If not call the Board of Health and tell them he refuses to remove vermin. Fight for your rights!

How do I get rid of the rats in my yard?

The rat burrows are destroying my yard. The rats don't usually come inside, although I have heard them in my attic once or twice. I know they live outside, though. How do I get rid of them without poisoning my (outdoor) cats or my neighbors' cats. I prefer not to set out a trap, because the burrows are close to the sidewalk and could hurt neighborhood pets. I prefer to poison them. Can I just use a funnel to get the poison down into the holes? How do I get rid of the rats in my yard?
I say get new cats, if your old ones aren't doing the trick, what else are they good forHow do I get rid of the rats in my yard?
Smoke them out with a burning cloth...
The make special traps that are just made for rats to get in. No cats can get into them. They go in and eat the poison and come back out and take them back to their nests and so forth. Pretty soon they will start getting really thirsty and move on to find a place to die. If they have been up in your attic that means there is a hole or way to get into their. I suggest just having a pest control service come out. It isn't that expensive to have them crawl up into your attic and put out poision and put out the traps.

How do I gradually put my two rats together?

I have two rats. They are both female, and very energetic. I once tried to put them in the same cage, but it leaded to a fight, and one of them got an abscess. Now that my rat is healed, I need to put them in the same cage again, but I'm not sure how to do it more gradually so that it doesn't happen again. Can someone tell me how to do this? Thanks! How do I gradually put my two rats together?
ratties are territorial...if you introduce them on neutral territory it will probably work out better

let them both out of their cages for 'playtime' together...do it several times a day and they will eventually make friends, Im sure...rats love company more than being on their own, except in very very rare cases

you can put a drop of vanilla on both of them at the base of their tails, this helps to make them have the 'same smell' which is VERY important to ratties as smell is their main sense

ratties spill a few drops of their pee on each other to 'scent' each other so they can mark that they 'belong' to the same social group

rats do a 'powergroom' thing to each other to determine who is the Alpha rat, it can look quite violent but as long as no one is bleeding then it is better to let them sort it out

my older ratties pin my baby down and powergroom her to show their dominant position, sometimes I want so bad to intervene but I can see that they are not seriously hurting her and she is better off when they accept her as part of their group

actually they have done so now, it has taken about 2-3 weeks...

the best thing you can do is take it gradually and let them make friends at their own pace, but dont let them do any serious damage to each other in the process

btw, ratties stand up and 'box' each other and do other actions that we can think of as fighting but it is part of how they behave and is nothing to worry about most of the time

good luck :)How do I gradually put my two rats together?
clena out ur cage so there sno trac eof smell useally u would clena the cage like this..

okay cleaning a cage is always the most hardest thing that loads of peaple get wrong

u put 3 caps full of ordinary bleach into 1/4 of warm water then you get a brush or a cloth and wash ur cage get off all the muck then u leave it for 5 mins come back and rinse it of with normal water

and this is very safe for them =]

then with toys and ur bottles put them in a full bucke of bleach and water and soak them and leave them for 1 hour then come abck and put them in a bucket of clean water and let them soal for anther hour them let them dry or dry them off with a towel it pervents falgy and germs groing on toy/bottle/bowls

then after that put them in together they will fight anyway but not full on and let them do ti tis the way to c whos boss
